Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
